Ever since you can remember, you have probably been told that humans are omnivores. Indeed, as far as we know, humans have always consumed meat and other animal products, but just because it has always been so, it doesn’t meant that this is the right path. You may think that being a vegan is not healthy since meat contains a lot of nutrients that are essential for our well being. You may also think that a vegan diet is expensive. As far as we are concerned, we like to do some research before believing everything we hear and so should you. In what follows, we will discuss a few main reasons why we believe that the vegan diet is a good choice for everybody.

1. Because we can

As the most evolved species on Earth, it should be our duty to care for the less intelligent species. While animals eating each other is part of the circle of life, humans take pride in being above all animals, so we should not include ourselves in this circle. Moreover, consuming meat would not be a bad thing if we would kill animals in a humane way. Sadly, the big corporations in the meat industry, treat animals in a very cruel manner. For more information on this matter, we advise you to watch the “Earthlings” documentary, which will open your eyes to all the things that you choose to ignore daily.

2. Because it is healthy

Most vegans lead very healthy lifestyles. Due to the fact that being a vegan requires some time and effort, vegans usually do some research about the food they eat. They read the labels of all packaged food, something that we should all do, and they try to have a balanced diet. Even people who are part vegans are less exposed to obesity risks. In essence, meat is neither good nor bad for our health, but like it goes with everything in life, eating meat in excess in not advisable as it can lead to obesity, liver problems (due to too much protein) and many other health problems.

3. Because we can get all necessary nutrients from plants

The main nutrients in meat are fibers and proteins. However, everything that we find in meat, we can also find in fruits and vegetables. You can get plenty of protein from legumes, nuts and seeds, but also from certain veggies such as spinach. The truth is that being a vegan, requires you to find ways in which you can replace meat, which will drive you to actually respect the necessary daily amount of nutrients, something that people who have an omnivorous diet rarely do.

4. Because a vegan diet is cheap

While there a lot of websites which promote a very diverse and expensive vegan diet, it is possible to be vegan without spending too much money. All you have to do is consume seasonal fruits and veggies. The main elements of a vegan diet are grains, legumes, seeds, beans and nuts, all of which are very affordable. Coconut milk, almond milk and exotic fruits are welcomed, but they are not essential for a vegan diet.

5. Because you can change the world

You may think that being vegan won’t make much of a difference, since most of the world has an omnivorous diet. However, if you decide to go vegan, you will spare the lives of about 50 animals per year. Moreover, you will probably inspire others to do so as well. Being vegan is not only about individual health and love of animals. Meat corporations produce a lot of pollution. The same cannot be said about veggie and fruit farms, which pollute very little (during the transportation process), compared to the carbon dioxide that they filter. If more people would be vegans, we would have more fruit and veggie farms, which would mean less pollution, healthier locally grown food and less tormented animals.
